About OpenPresentation
openpresentation.org is the reference home of the Open Presentation Format (OPF): its spec, schemas, docs and free tools.
What OPF is
OPF is an open file format for slide decks. A deck is one JSON document that describes its narrative, slides, content, assets and design choices, without a PowerPoint file container. You can also write it as Markdown or YAML and convert it to the same JSON.
Why it exists
A .pptx file is a zipped bundle of XML: hard to review, hard to diff and hard for a model to write correctly. An OPF deck is plain text with a published JSON Schema, so people can review it, git can track it, and models and agents can author and validate it directly. PowerPoint stays available as an export. Compare OPF with PPTX, Markdown slide tools and HTML frameworks.
How it is maintained
- The spec, schemas, docs and packages are developed in the open in the OpenPresentation/opf repository, through issues and pull requests. Data Advantage stewards the format and this site.
- Releases are published to npm as the @openpresentation packages. The changelog lists every release.
- Each release's schemas are frozen at
/schema/opf/<version>, and/schema/opf/v1follows the current release. See schema versioning. - This site pulls its docs and schemas from the pinned release, so it does not fork the spec.
License
OPF schemas, catalogs, examples, and package sources are MIT licensed, for personal and commercial use. Third-party tools may implement OPF without adopting sponsor branding. The site, the schemas and the hosted MCP server need no signup, account or key.
Contribute
Contributions should improve the format itself: schemas, catalog records, examples, validation, and package tooling. Use GitHub issues for bugs, schema questions, catalog proposals, and compatibility reports.
